Everything You Need to Know About the New 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA

Completely redesigned for the 2028 model year, the Mercedes-Benz GLA will arrive with major changes for its third generation. With a new design, slightly larger dimensions, a redesigned interior and new powertrains, our popular compact SUV will be offered in fully electric versions for the first time.

The 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA is built on the MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform, also used for the new generations of the CLA and GLB. Its wheelbase has been extended by 61 mm, helping to improve interior space, particularly rear-seat legroom.

An all-electric GLA for 2028

Two electric versions will be available in Canada: the GLA 250+ and GLA 350 4MATIC. The first one will produce 268 horsepower and feature rear-wheel drive, while the second will increase output to 349 horsepower and benefit from 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The 4MATIC versions will also be capable of towing up to 2,000 kg (approximately 4,400 lb).

Both will be powered by an 85-kWh lithium-ion battery. Mercedes-Benz is announcing a range of up to 650 km based on the WLTP cycle. However, the official range according to Canadian testing standards has not yet been announced.

Charging is one of the main improvements over the previous generation. Thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture, DC fast-charging power can reach up to 320 kW. Under optimal conditions, Mercedes-Benz says it will be possible to recover up to 270 km of WLTP range in just 10 minutes. AC charging can reach up to 22 kW.

The electric models will also gain a 107-litre front trunk, providing a convenient place to store various accessories or charging cables.

A hybrid option completes the lineup

The shift toward electric power does not mean the end of the gasoline engine. Hybrid versions of the 2028 GLA will also be available, featuring a new turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt electrical system.

On these models, an electric motor will be integrated directly into a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. It will provide an additional 22 kW (approximately 30 horsepower) and will even allow the GLA to travel solely on electric power when little power is required, particularly during city driving.

Models equipped with the 4MATIC system will also offer a TERRAIN mode, which adjusts the operation of the powertrain, steering and brakes for driving on dirt or gravel roads.

Screens, space and technology on board

The changes are just as significant inside, where the new MB.OS operating system will manage many of the vehicle's functions as well as the latest generation of the MBUX virtual assistant. Using artificial intelligence, the system will be able to provide information and suggestions based on context and usage habits.

The dashboard has also been completely redesigned. Available as an option, the MBUX Superscreen combines three displays beneath a single glass surface: a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central touchscreen and a second 14-inch display for the front passenger. The centre console features a two-tier design and includes a wireless smartphone charging area.

A panoramic glass roof helps create a brighter interior, while a SKY CONTROL roof with adjustable opacity will be among the available options.

The 2028 GLA will also be available with AMG Line and AMG Line Plus packages, as well as ambient lighting offering 64 colours to personalize the interior.

The 2028 GLA, coming soon to Mercedes-Benz Rive-Sud

More spacious and technologically advanced, the 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA will above all provide buyers with a wider choice of powertrains. The electric versions will focus on long driving range and fast charging, while the hybrid model will retain the versatility of a gasoline engine while improving on the current version.

The new 2028 GLA is expected to arrive at Mercedes-Benz Rive-Sud during the second half of 2027, although the exact date of its Canadian launch has yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, there is no need to wait to discover this popular model. The 2026 GLA, currently in inventory, already offers an excellent combination of agility, comfort, technology and everyday versatility.
