Mercedes-Benz Winter Wheel and Tire Packages: What to Know Before Quebec’s December 1 Deadline

Every fall, the same question comes up in the service lane: when do the winter tires need to go on? In Quebec, the law sets the answer. From December 1 to March 15 inclusive, vehicles registered in the province must be equipped with four winter tires that meet the provincial standard and are in good condition.

A winter wheel and tire package makes that yearly switch faster and simpler. This guide explains what the rule asks of you, how a mounted winter set works on a Mercedes-Benz, and how to plan your changeover so December 1 never catches you off guard.

What Quebec’s Winter Tire Rule Requires

The rule comes from Quebec’s Highway Safety Code. It applies to nearly every passenger vehicle registered in the province, including rental vehicles. Between December 1 and March 15 inclusive, all four tires must be winter tires. Two winter tires paired with two all-season tires do not meet the requirement.

Drivers who skip the switch face a fine of $200 to $300, plus costs. The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) also recommends installing winter tires before December 1, since cold weather and snow often arrive earlier in the season. It suggests leaving them on for a few weeks after March 15 when spring conditions stay unpredictable.

Studded tires follow their own calendar. On passenger vehicles, studs are permitted from October 15 to May 1.

How to Tell If a Tire Is Winter-Approved

Since December 15, 2014, only two kinds of tires count as winter tires under the Highway Safety Code. The first is any tire that carries the three-peak mountain and snowflake pictogram on its sidewall. The second is a studded tire. The older “M+S” marking on its own does not qualify.

That detail matters for Mercedes-Benz owners, because many models leave the factory on all-season tires. The 2026 C 300 4MATIC Sedan rides on 18-inch all-season runflat tires, and the 2027 GLC 400 4MATIC Electric SUV uses 20-inch all-season runflat tires. An all-season tire only meets the rule if its sidewall shows the mountain and snowflake pictogram, so take a close look at your tires well before the end of November.

Why Winter Tires Grip Better in the Cold

Winter tires use a rubber compound designed to stay soft and flexible in freezing weather. The SAAQ points out that they provide better grip on ice and snow, and also once the temperature drops below 7°C, even on dry pavement.

Deep tread blocks and many small slits, called sipes, help the tire bite into snow and clear slush. 4MATIC all-wheel drive helps you pull away on slippery roads, and winter tires let your Mercedes-Benz stop and turn with confidence.

Mercedes Original (MO) Winter Tires

Mercedes Original tires, marked with an MO imprint on the sidewall, are developed with leading tire manufacturers specifically for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. To earn the MO designation, a tire must meet more than 40 detailed specifications and pass several rounds of testing covering its rubber mixture, structure and tread.

MO winter tires are recommended once temperatures stay below 7°C. Their softer compounds and purpose-built tread patterns help your Mercedes-Benz handle snow, slush, ice and mud.

What a Winter Wheel and Tire Package Includes

A winter wheel and tire package pairs four winter tires with their own set of wheels. The tires stay mounted on those wheels year after year, so each seasonal change becomes a simple wheel swap.

That setup brings practical benefits:

  • Faster changeovers: Swapping complete wheels takes less time than removing and remounting tires on a single set of rims.
  • Protection for your original wheels: Your factory wheels stay stored, away from road salt, slush and winter potholes.
  • Less handling of the tires: Tires that are not pulled on and off rims twice a year avoid repeated mounting stress.
  • A set matched to your vehicle: The package is built around the tire sizes approved for your specific model.

Why Size Matters on a Mercedes-Benz

Many Mercedes-Benz models use different tire sizes at the front and rear, a setup called a staggered fitment. The C 300 4MATIC Sedan uses 225/45R18 tires up front and 245/40R18 tires at the rear. The GLC 400 4MATIC Electric SUV uses 235/50R20 front tires and 265/45R20 rear tires.

A winter set must respect the sizes and load ratings approved for your model. Correct sizing keeps the speedometer accurate and lets 4MATIC all-wheel drive, stability control and the driver assistance systems work as designed. Our parts and service team confirms the approved wheel and tire sizes for your exact vehicle before you order a winter package.

Plan Your Changeover Early

Tire appointments fill up quickly as December approaches, so booking early gives you a wider choice of dates.

There is also a good reason to buy before the year ends. Until December 31, 2026, participating Mercedes-Benz dealers in Canada offer 15% off Mercedes Original winter tire and wheel packages, as well as full sets of four MO tires, on eligible in-store purchases. The discount applies to the dealer’s selling price before taxes and does not cover labour. Terms and conditions apply.

Before the winter set goes on, check the tread depth and the overall condition of each tire, since the law calls for winter tires in good condition. Cold air lowers tire pressure, so plan to check your pressures once a month through the season. The Mercedes-Benz App can display tire pressure along with mileage and other vehicle status details, which makes that monthly check quick.

When spring returns, clean the winter set and store it somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
