From 4MATIC to Remote Start: How Mercedes-Benz Technology Makes Winter Easier

Cold mornings, frosted glass and slushy roads are part of every Canadian winter. The good news is that a modern Mercedes-Benz carries a long list of features designed to make those months easier, from the moment you warm up the cabin to the moment you park in a snowy lot.

Some of these features work quietly in the background, like all-wheel drive. Others sit in your pocket, like the Mercedes-Benz App. Here is a friendly tour of the technology that helps you start, see, steer and stay comfortable all season long.

4MATIC All-Wheel Drive Keeps You Moving

4MATIC all-wheel drive is the foundation of winter driving in a Mercedes-Benz. The system stays engaged and sends torque to every wheel. It works with ESP, the standard Electronic Stability Program, and with the 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS). 4-ETS watches for the first sign of wheel slip and responds so torque reaches the wheels with the best grip, even if only one wheel has traction.

On the 2027 GLE, 4MATIC uses a fully variable system called Torque on Demand. It shifts torque between the front and rear axles anywhere from 0% to 100%, depending on the driving situation. Mercedes-Benz designed it to deliver strong traction on ice and snow.

Remote Start and Pre-Entry Climate Control

Nobody enjoys sitting in a frozen car. The Mercedes-Benz App, part of Mercedes-Benz Digital Extras, lets you handle the warm-up from your kitchen. Here is what it can do on a cold morning:

  • Remote Start: Start your vehicle from your smartphone or Apple Watch so the climate control gets a head start before you step outside.
  • Pre-Entry Climate Control: Set your preferred cabin temperature and switch on heated seats with a tap.
  • Departure time: Set the time you usually leave, and the vehicle warms up automatically for your daily routine.
  • Vehicle status: Check fuel level, tire pressure and, on electric and plug-in hybrid models, battery and charging status before you go.

Remote lock and unlock, plus a vehicle locator with horn and lights, also help on dark winter evenings in a crowded parking lot.

Heated Seats, Steering Wheel and Mirrors

Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel take the chill off quickly. On many models, the steering wheel heating starts strong and then reduces automatically after a few minutes to keep your hands comfortable without overheating.

Available Climate Comfort front seats add ventilation to the heating. On cold, damp days, running both together spreads the seat heat more quickly and helps keep you dry. On many models, heated side mirrors clear mist and frost from the mirror glass, so you can check your blind spots without stepping out with a scraper.

Clear Glass With Heated Wipers and MAGIC VISION CONTROL

Ice on the wiper blades smears the windshield right when you need a clear view. The 2027 GLC 400 4MATIC Electric SUV includes heated wiper blades as standard equipment.

MAGIC VISION CONTROL goes a step further. Conventional systems spray fluid from a few fixed nozzles. MAGIC VISION CONTROL delivers washer fluid through small openings built into the wiper blades, right where the rubber wipes. That means less spray across the glass and less fluid wasted. In the fully heated version of the system, the washer fluid reservoir, the supply lines and the wiper blades are all warmed, which helps stop slush and ice from building up on the blades. MAGIC VISION CONTROL is offered on the 2027 GLE for the first time.

DIGITAL LIGHT for Dark Winter Evenings

Winter days are short, and many drives happen in the dark. Available DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps use about 1.3 million tiny mirrors in each headlamp to shape the beam with great precision. Adaptive functions include bad-weather light, enhanced fog light and cornering light, so the road ahead stays well lit as conditions change.

DIGITAL LIGHT can also mask out oncoming traffic with high beams on, letting you keep more light on the road without dazzling other drivers.

Keep Sensors Clear for PARKTRONIC

PARKTRONIC uses ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers to measure the distance to obstacles and alert you while parking. In winter, packed snow, ice or a film of salt can block those sensors or trigger constant beeping when nothing is there. Tall snowbanks can also sit right at sensor height and set off real warnings in tight spots.

The fix is simple. Before driving, gently wipe each round sensor with a soft cloth or glove, using warm water or a non-abrasive de-icer if needed. Add the sensors to the same routine as brushing off your headlights, taillights and cameras. If a parking warning appears in bad weather, stop safely and clear the bumpers, and the system often returns to normal right away.

Electric Models Stay Warm Efficiently

Mercedes-Benz electric models handle winter comfort with smart heating. The electric GLC is equipped with an air-side heat pump that uses about one-third of the electrical energy a comparable electric heater needs for the same output. It gathers heat from the drive unit, the battery and the outside air, and it can warm the battery before fast charging so charging stays quick in the cold.

Pre-conditioning the cabin while the vehicle is plugged in also saves battery energy for the drive itself.
