Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung: Second Model in the Mercedes-Benz Mythos Series
September 14 2026,
Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all-new Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung on the occasion of the Formula 1 Madrid Grand Prix in Spain. This extremely limited-production, rear-wheel-drive coupe is powered by a V8 engine and has one primary objective: to maximize driving excitement and performance both on the road and on the track.
The timing could hardly have been better, as the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is currently dominating the 2026 season. The team leads the Constructors’ Championship, while its two drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, occupy the top two positions in the Drivers’ Championship.
A Completely Transformed CLE
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is much more than simply a more powerful version of the CLE. The project originated from the initiative of a small group of AMG engineers who wanted to push the coupe significantly further in terms of driving dynamics.
Each example is hand-built in Affalterbach on the basis of a Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, but the modifications are extensive. The body has been widened, the chassis thoroughly reworked, and several components have been replaced with parts specifically developed for this model. Extensive use of carbon fibre and other weight-saving measures have reduced the vehicle’s weight by approximately 170 kg compared with the model on which it is based.
The name is particularly fitting, as “Spezialanfertigung” can be translated from German as “special production” or “custom-made.” It is a designation that reflects the handcrafted and exclusive nature of the project.
A 646-Horsepower Twin-Turbo V8
Beneath the matte-finish bodywork is one of the features most likely to capture enthusiasts’ attention: a 4.0-litre AMG twin-turbo V8 engine producing 646 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, or approximately 627 lb-ft.
Unlike the CLE 53, which is equipped with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, the CLE 646 sends all of its power exclusively to the rear wheels. An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential helps manage that power and optimize traction. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G nine-speed transmission completes the package.
The coupe can reach 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds and has a top speed of 310 km/h.
A Design Inspired by the Racetrack
AMG’s work goes far beyond the powertrain. The CLE 646 features a coilover suspension specifically developed for this model, with four-way adjustable dampers. It also benefits from AMG ceramic composite brakes and a body that has been widened by 60 mm at both the front and rear.
The front diffuser can be adjusted between “Street” and “Race” positions, while the carbon-fibre rear wing is also adjustable. At top speed, the aerodynamic package can generate more than 250 kg of downforce.
Even the interior contributes to the pursuit of lower weight. The rear seats and some of the sound insulation have been removed, while racing bucket seats, a roll cage and carbon-fibre door panels further emphasize the model’s performance-focused character.
Only 30 Examples Worldwide
As much as we would all like to get our hands on this one-of-a-kind model, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second model in the highly exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos series, following the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. Only 30 examples will be built worldwide and, reflecting the tremendous interest surrounding this creation, all of them had already been reserved before its world premiere.
